Rehabilitation Therapy Standards, update - RTS

Project leader: Prof. Dr. Heiner Vogel
Project team: Kathrin Murauer M.A. Soziologie
Funding: Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund
Duration: 2023 – 2025

Background

The Rehabilitation Therapy Standards (RTS) are a crucial component of the quality assurance of medical rehabilitation provided by the German Pension Insurance. They contain detailed specifications for the design of medical rehabilitation services (e.g., minimum duration and minimum frequency of individual therapies). Currently, there are nine indication-specific RTS for coronary heart disease, chronic back pain, type 2 diabetes mellitus, stroke, breast cancer, alcohol dependence, hip and knee joint replacement, depressive disorders in adults, and for children and adolescents with asthma, obesity, or atopic dermatitis.

Methods

As part of the project, the current state of care and the implementation of the RTS are analyzed based on performance documentation from rehabilitation facilities. Through literature searches on therapy and treatment procedures, potential changes in evidence are examined, and the therapy guidelines and scopes of the RTS are updated accordingly. Additionally, two new generic/cross-indication RTS are to be introduced.
