Research Dermatology

We conduct excellent research with the aim of translating new findings and promising approaches into practice as quickly as possible. In this way, we contribute to the continuous improvement of patient care. Research at our University Dermatological Clinic focusses on skin cancer, allergy and inflammation.

Dermatooncological research

A large proportion of the patients who come to our university hospital visit us because of tumours of the skin. No other human organ develops tumours as frequently as the skin. These include benign tumours, but also malignant cancers. Due to its great clinical importance, skin cancer is also one of the main areas of research at our centre. Melanoma, cutaneous lymphoma and Merkel cell carcinoma are investigated in various working groups.

Allergy and inflammation

Allergic diseases are becoming increasingly important in western industrialised societies. Around a quarter of people suffer from one or more allergies, which are an excessive reaction of the immune system to normally harmless environmental substances. The clarification of the mechanisms by which allergens develop their disease-promoting effect is an important research concern of several working groups at our clinic. Our research focusses on the development of contact allergies, bee and wasp venom allergies, eczema diseases and drug reactions.

In addition to basic research, we also conduct clinical research in the field of bee and wasp venom allergies and drug reactions. With the Allergy Centre Mainfranken, our clinic is also home to an institution that links patient care, research, training and further education in the field of allergology on an interdisciplinary basis.

Several working groups at our clinic are also dedicated to the investigation of signalling pathways that control inflammatory processes in vascular diseases and chronic inflammatory skin diseases. Blistering autoimmune diseases and psoriasis are long-standing focal points of interest in our clinically orientated research.
