Stimulatory procedures

Stimulatory procedures activate brain function without using medication employing various methods, such as staying awake or magnetic waves. They are used to treat depression in particular.

Sleep-restriction therapy and light therapy

Sleep-restriction therapy and light therapy are complementary therapies in the treatment of depression. Sleep-restriction therapy makes use of the well-established positive effect of sleep deprivation on depression by spending a whole night or the second part of the night and the following day without sleep in a controlled setting. Light therapy is specifically used in seasonal depression. The "light shower" takes place under a daylight lamp.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS)

During rTMS, nerve cells in certain areas of the brain are stimulated by a repetitive series of magnetic impulses. The treatment has hardly any side effects and does not require anesthesia. It can be used as part of an individualized clinical attempt to treat depression.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)

During ECT, the brain is stimulated by an electrical impulse under controlled conditions – anesthesia and muscle-relaxant medication – to induce an epileptic seizure. The treatment is very effective and has few side effects. It is mainly used for therapy-resistant depression, but also has a positive effect on various other psychological as well as neurological conditions.

The stimulation procedures are an integral part of the S-3 guidelines of the DGPPN.
