Research in the Department of Cardiovascular Genetics

In addition to the diagnosis and treatment of genetic heart diseases, research is another important focus in the Department of Cardiovascular Genetics.

In the lab, the scientist Brenda Gerull and her team are investigating how genetic changes in patients lead to heart failure in order to develop specific therapies in the future. For example, skin cells of affected persons are reprogrammed into pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) and then differentiated into heart muscle cells in order to find out which mechanisms play a role in the development of the diseases and how these can be targeted in cell culture.

Find out more about this and other model systems, as well as the role of cell-cell junctions and nuclear envelope proteins, on the research area of the Department of Cardiovascular Genetics.
