Center of Mental Health (CMH)

The Center of Mental Health not only replaces the old “Nervenklinik” as a term, but also enlarges its vision and scope. The term "Mental Health" has a long-standing tradition in English-speaking countries. The best-known example worldwide is the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland. In Germany, the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim is historically the oldest institution of this kind. We believe that the term "Mental Health" better reflects today’s diversity of disciplines and institutions with their differential approaches to mental illness and mental health.

At the University Hospital Würzburg (UKW) these are the Department of Psychiatry, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy and the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy. As an institution of the Medical Faculty of the University, the Department of Medical Psychology and Psychotherapy and as an institution of the Faculty of Human Sciences of the University, the chair of psychology I with the fields of clinical psychology, intervention psychology and psychotherapy have joined. Via the two interdisciplinary psychosomatic and neurogerontopsychiatric day-care units, also the Departments of Neurology and Internal Medicine II are part of the Center of Mental Health.

In addition to patient care, all these institutions of the Center of Mental Health act closely together in the areas of teaching and research. A paradigmatic example is the Comprehensive Anxiety Center.

The term "Mental Health" reflects the increasing importance of preventive and, in particular, psychoeducational and psychotherapeutic interventions to reduce the occurrence or recurrence of mental illness. For this purpose, we have founded the German Center of Prevention Research on Mental Health as a joint institute of the university and the university hospital.

With the Center of Mental Health, we want to develop a platform in close cooperation with general practitioners, health centers and self-help groups for the further development of innovative and individual interventions in the interest of patients.

In Würzburg, I can do research on developmental disorders of the nervous system in a world-wide renowned research environment.
